First Impressions of the Sichuan Provincial Library’s Sterilization Machine

From late 2019 to early 2020, the mere mention of “COVID‑19” struck fear into many. Although national policies succeeded in bringing the epidemic under effective control in China, cases continued to rise daily. Amid this sensitive period, universities across the country gradually ushered in a belated start to the academic year.
As everyone knows, books are indispensable to students in their daily lives. However, due to frequent handling and sharing, they often serve as carriers for numerous bacteria and viruses. To provide students with a safe and healthy reading environment, the Sichuan University Library has purchased four Fono FLBS-601 book sterilization units at once. These devices employ ultraviolet disinfection technology, featuring ten built-in high‑intensity short‑wave UV lamps that effectively eliminate a wide range of bacteria and viruses. In addition, they are infused with natural fragrances and use plant‑derived biocides that are harmless to humans, enhancing sterilization while simultaneously removing harmful substances such as xylene and ammonia—common sources of unpleasant odors—from books.
After learning about its functions, I remained very curious about this new device, so I joined a group of equally inquisitive classmates and lined up for our first experience with the “book sterilizer.” Although it was newly introduced, there were already quite a few users. Despite the long queue, I didn’t have to wait long before it was my turn. The book sterilizer has a neat, boxy design, clearly crafted entirely from aluminum with a strong metallic finish. Its cabinet is divided into upper and lower sections: the upper compartment features a glass window set into the door, which opens to reveal the internal UV‑light sterilization process; the lower section is fully enclosed. I pulled open the handle of the upper door, placed my books inside—there are six slots that can simultaneously disinfect six volumes—and closed the door. With a single touch, the cycle starts, completing the 30‑second disinfection in no time. The whole process is both efficient and straightforward. Holding my freshly sterilized books and inhaling their faint, pleasant scent, I couldn’t help but think this had been a truly worthwhile experience.
