UV Radiation Test for the FLBS-601 Self-Service Book Sterilizer

Most self-service book sterilizers employ UV‑C disinfection, featuring built-in high‑intensity short‑wave ultraviolet lamps arranged in multiple arrays within the operating chamber. The typical wavelength is 253.7 nm; this spectral range is characterized by high frequency and short wavelength, delivering the most effective germicidal performance.
UV-C ultraviolet light is characterized by its short wavelength and high energy, enabling it to rapidly disrupt the molecular structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) or RNA (ribonucleic acid) within microbial cells—such as bacteria, viruses, and spores—rendering them incapable of reproduction and depriving pathogens of their ability to self‑replicate. Consequently, UV-C–based products find a wide range of applications.
Many readers who see self-service book sterilization machines may wonder: Could the UV‑C ultraviolet light pass through the viewing window and expose people to radiation, potentially harming human health? The answer is no. This particular wavelength of ultraviolet light has weak penetrating power, and most common barriers can effectively block it, so it poses no risk to humans.
Below is the photobiological hazard test report for the Funo self-service book sterilization machine, issued by the National Center for Quality Supervision and Inspection of Electric Light Sources.

To validate this result, we will use a specialized ultraviolet‑light testing instrument to measure the UV intensity within the operating chamber of the book sterilization device during operation, and we will also conduct tests to assess UV leakage from the device’s viewing window.
Pre-test preparation:
Test model of the self-service book sterilization machine: FLBS-601
Measurement equipment model: IS126C UV radiometer
Ultraviolet measurement unit: μW/cm²
Test method:
① Measure the ultraviolet intensity in the operating room while the self-service book sterilization device is in operation.
The procedure is as follows: Set the book sterilizer to a working time of 30 seconds, place the UV radiometer inside the self-service book sterilizer’s operating chamber, close the door and press the start button, then perform the test on the self-service book sterilizer for a duration of 30 seconds.
② While the book sterilization machine is in operation, conduct tests for ultraviolet leakage at close range outside the operating room.
The procedure is as follows: Set the book sterilizer to operate for 30 seconds, and position the UV radiometer probe at four locations—upper, lower, left, and right—along the door seam of the sterilization chamber’s viewing window, as well as at the center of the glass, to measure UV intensity. Measurements shall be taken immediately after the self-service book sterilizer is switched on, with each test lasting 30 seconds.

Ultraviolet intensity in the operating room during work: 1187.7 μW/cm².

Test Results: ① When the book sterilization machine is operating normally, the average ultraviolet irradiance inside the sterilization chamber is 1121.5 μW/cm².

When the self-service book sterilizer is in operation, the ultraviolet radiation outside the operating chamber is 0 μW/cm².
Test results: ② When the book sterilization device is operating normally, the ultraviolet irradiance measured outside the viewing window is 0 μW/cm², indicating no UV leakage.

The above experiments lead to the following conclusions: During operation, the ultraviolet intensity within the machine’s working chamber is relatively uniform, with no disinfection blind spots; furthermore, when users operate this device, no ultraviolet radiation leaks, ensuring it poses no harm to readers. Therefore, the general public can confidently use the self-service book sterilizer to disinfect and sterilize their books.
